Lets talk about .... KINESIOLOGY TAPING

Kinesiology tape is a tape made up of a blend of cotton and nylon. It’s designed to mimic the skin’s elasticity, benefiting the body without restricting its range of movement. Tape can be applied to the Equine and Human body in various formations and at various tensions to provide specific effects.

How does it help?

ALLEVIATE - research is minimal, but there is some evidence that kinesiology taping can effect the sensory nervous system within skin, fascia and muscles, changing the pain signal pathways helping to facilitate a reduction in pain in that area.

DECOMPRESS - kinesiology tape has a mechanical lifting effect see photo 4 Allowing space beneath the skin and the layers of tissue beneath it, lymphatic ducts and blood vessels so fluid is cleared more effectively and efficiently resulting in a reduction in swelling, oedema, tension and tightness in the tissues.

HEALING - kinesiology tape increased blood and lymph flow to area, increasing oxygen and nutrients to the area and the removal of waste products eg lactic acid improving healing and recovery.

REHABILITATION - kinesiology tape can be used to "activate" a muscle to make it work harder or "inhibit" a muscle which needs to work less. This can support, stabilise and increase propriceptive feedback to an area helping to effect change in muscular patterns and memories improving postural and biomechanical dysfunction.

How will it be used during a session with Equine Wellbeing co?

Currently, we are only qualified in applying tape to Horses, however we are fully planning to add this skill to our human repertoire for the full matchy matchy experience! I joke, however when considering taping your horse is always treated with a bespoke taping plan suited to your horse's needs. Therefore a combination of massage, stretching, mobilisation techniques, fascia release and if beneficial kinesiology taping will be used. Kinesiology taping will continue to offer benefits from application until it needs to be removed (usually up to 5 days). It does come at a little extra cost, especially if a significant amount of taping is needed but by prolonging the treatment effect it gives exceptional value for money!
